Machan Census Returns
The following in date order cover all Machan, Green, Lloyd and Bunn Census returns found and identified as part of the family.

1841
Township of Towthorpe, Christopher Machan (45), recorded as Farmer, and wife Sarah with brother John (56) and mother Elizabeth (85).
George Thompson (25), recorded as a shoemaker, lives with his wife Sarah (20) and children Ann (5), Thomas (4) and Jane (2). They live in St Mary, Castlegate, York.
William Machan (45), recorded as Agricultural Labourer, lives with Thomison (45) and children Thomas (20), Sarah (11), Elizabeth (8), Christopher (5) and Jane (2). They live in Strensall.
Also residing at the Half Moon Inn, Strensall is William Machan (20) believed to be the eldest child of William and Thomasin although age is one year out. His profession is recorded as MD which may be representing a profession or the same as above which would mean he was a Carpenter.
Census return Dickleburgh with Langmere, Norfolk, Roger Green (48) and daughter Mary (20). Roger is recorded as a labourer. Dickleburgh is a small village south of Norwich.
In the 1841 census a number of William Green’s are recorded but it is not possible to determine exactly the son of Roger Green.
Ann Bunn (45) is recorded as living with daughter Charlotte (11) and Harriet (presumed Sarah) (10). They are living with a Harriet Bartron (30) and her children. Ann is recorded as Independent. No other record can be found in the 1841 census so it is assumed Harriet is Sarah and Betsy is living elsewhere.
1851
The census records Thomas Machan (61) (Retired Inn Keeper) (Born Towthorpe) and wife Jane (58) (born Scarborough), with lodger John D Hudson (37) (Annuitant) (born Hull) {census entry}. This is probably the uncle of Christopher Machan.
Recorded as staying with Thomas Croft is Thomison Machan (59) born in Lilling (Sherrif Hutton) and profession washerwoman with her son Christopher (14) born in Haxby. The record has them living in Dunnington which is East of York. Thomas Croft is an Agricultural Labourer and has wife Mary and Daughter Ann with another lodger Thomas Berry. What appears to be the case is the older children have moved on but no record of younger sister Jane is a mystery as no death record can be found.
Living in Dickleburgh is William Green (25) and wife Charlotte (21) and William Bunn 10 months recorded as illegitimate. Living with them is Roger Green (58). William is recorded as ad Agricultural labourer.
1861
Staying in St Maurice, York is Thomison Machan recorded as widower aged 65 and a visitor. The place is next to the Cup Keys Inn, number 70 Penley’s Grove Street. Also living at the address is Jane Stabler (23) and her children Thomas and Jane. Thomison’s birth is recorded as Sherrif Hutton. Jane Stabler is the youngest daughter of Thomison.
Elizabeth Morritt (nee Machan) (27) lives with her husband Isaac (29) in York with their children Sarah A (4), Thomas (2) and Elizabeth (9 months)
Living in Normanby is William Green and wife Charlotte with children William (10), Henry (8), Elizabeth (2) and Harriet (3 months). Living with them is Charlotte’s mother Ann Bunn (70). William is recorded as a Furnace Labourer. Elizabeth and Harriet are recorded as born Tees Tilery, Ann Bunn Dimmick Gloucestershire and the rest are recorded as born in Dickleburgh, Norfolk.
1871
Living in York is Jane Stabler nee Machan aged 31. She is married to Joseph 31 and living with them are Sarah A (11), Florence (8) and Ann (6). It is unknown whether Sarah in the 1871 census is the same as Jane in the 1861.
Elizabeth Morritt (nee Machan) (37) lives with her husband Isaac (39) in York with their children Sarah A (14), Thomas (12) and Elizabeth (10), Isaac W (6), Frank(3) and Mary (1).
Recorded as living at 30 Cleveland Street South Bank is William Machan (35) labourer at Iron Works born in York. Recorded as also living at the address is Thomas (4), James (3) and daughter Annie (Sarah (Jane) Annie). They also have three lodgers William Neal, William Caster and Thomas Williams.
This entry is confusing based on is William really Christopher, the age and the birth location is right, names of two of the children are correct, but an unknown older daughter which is not legible but from the other information Sarah Annie (Died in Explosives Accident).
Living with Samuel Stokes (33) and Elizabeth Stokes (43) is William Lloyd (15), Mary Jane Lloyd (14), Eliza Lloyd (10), Sarah A Lloyd (14) , Charles Lloyd (8), Samuel Stokes (4) and also John McQueen (33) and John Welsh (25). Sarah A is recorded as daughter. They live in Clay Lane, Eston. Sarah Ann’s father was called William.
Henry Green (18) Labourer at Iron Works, recorded as lodging at 18 York Street South Bank with Dinah Wood.
William Green (47) is recorded as Brother-in-law and living with Thomas (51) and Elizabeth (43) Jay. William also has his children Elizabeth (12) and Charlotte (8) living with them. Elizabeth must be another sister of Charlotte Bunn. No reference to wife Charlotte can be found in the 1871, 81 or 91 census – see later. They live in South Bank.
Census record has a Thomas Stainthorpe (42) with children Frederick (11) and Tom (9). Recorded as his wife is a Charlotte Stainthorpe born Dickleburgh and aged 39. They live in Hartlepool.
1881
Christopher Machan (45) (Labourer at Iron Works) and wife Anne (45) live with their sons Thomas (16) (Labourer in Brickyard), James (15) (Labourer in Brickyard) and son Henry (8) Scholar. Living at 20 Coral Street South Bank Middlesbrough
Jane Stabler (42) lives with husband Joseph (42) in Mill Lane, Mustard Mill Buildings York. Daughter Ann aged 12 is also living with them.
Elizabeth Morritt (nee Machan) (47) lives with her husband Isaac (49) in York with their children Thomas (22) and Elizabeth (20), Isaac W (16), Frank(13), Mary (11) and Emily (7). They also have a lodger James Chapman living with them.
Thomas Stainthorpe (51) occupation Corn Miller living 36 Grace Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool has sons Frederick (20) and Tom (18) both recorded as labourers. Living with them recorded as a Servant is Charlotte Green (50) born in Dickleborough.
1891
Anne Smith (widowed) (56) resides at 18 Coral Street, South Bank with her son Henry Machan Smith (17) (Labourer) and her other son Thomas William Smith (25) (labourer) with Thomas’ wife Alice (22) and their daughter Sarah Annie (10 months). (Name is Machan, Anne has used previous name and coincides with seperation from Christopher)
Christopher Machan (53) (General Labourer) lodging at 10 Durham Street, Middlesbrough. Head of the household is John Challoner {census entry}.
Jane Stabler cannot be found in the 1891 census but is in the 1901 and 1911.
Elizabeth Morritt (nee Machan) (56) lives with her husband Isaac (59) in York with their children Elizabeth (30), Isaac W (26), Frank(23), Mary (20) and Emily (17).
Thomas Stainthorpe lives with wife Charlotte Stainthorpe in Hartlepool with son Tom.
From the above it would appear William and Charlotte separated and she lived with Thomas Stainthorpe and married (1889) him after William’s death in 1886.
1901
Ann Machan (65), residing at 42 Upper Oxford Street with her son Henry (27) (Metal Catter Foundry) (snr) {census entry}.
Christopher Machan (63) (Iron Works Labourer) lives at 3 Danby Place, with a housekeeper Elizabeth A Fellis (29).
No record of either Thomas or James Machan can be found. This is because they have reverted back to the name of Smith. A record of Thomas is found with a Dutch wife and Children. The eldest is born in the US as confirmed in the 1891 Census.
Jane Stabler (62) lives with husband Joseph J (62) in York with an Ernest Aston also living with them.
Isaac William Morritt, son of Isaac and Elizabeth (nee Machan) lives with his wife Elizabeth and their children Henry(5), Hilda 4), Elizabeth (2), Annie (1) and Jena (3 months).
No record is found of Elizabeth (nee Machan). A death of an Elizabeth Morritt in Sheffield 1914 (82) and another record in Thorne 1919 (86). Either could be Elizabeth based on age.
Henry Green (48) (Stationary Engine Driver), residing at 8 Upper Oxford Street, South Bank with Sarah A (wife) (46) and children William Henry (worker) (27), Elizabeth (undefined) (23), Harry (worker) (20), Charles E (worker) (18) Sarah A (Scholar) (14) and Joseph (11) (Scholar), Albert (6) (Scholar), George (4), and Olive (1) {census entry}.
1911
In 1911 David Gibson (40) Driller Block and Iron Shipbuilding, lives with his wife Elizabeth (formerly Machan) (33) with Sarah Anne Machan (Independent) Widow of Christopher Machan born in York. Living with them is Elizabeth’s son Henry Machan (7). They also have border Richard D Dilworth riveter Shipbuilding, a servant Beatrice Rees (17) and nephew James Smith (17) Labourer at the Steelworks. David Gibson was born in Northumberland and the border was born in Newcastle upon Tyne. The others were all born in South Bank except Annie who was born in York.
Thomas Smith (46) lives at 8 Pearl Street South Bank. He is recorded as a labourer and born in York. Living with him are Elsie Smith (14) Domestic Servant, Amy Smith (12) and at School. Also living at the same address is Eliza Cartwright (Servant) and her children Henry G W (10), Joseph (7) and Ivy (4). Eliza Cartwright is recorded as born in Endfield Middlesex and Henry and Joseph born in Maske. All other children are born in South Bank. No record of Thomas’ wife although he is still recorded as married.
Jane Stabler (72), Christopher Machan’s sister, lives with husband Joseph J Stabler (72) in York.
Living at 96 Surrey Street South Bank is Sarah Ann Green, widowed aged 57, recorded as born in Stockton on Tees. Living with her are the children William (37) and Olive (11) (school). Also the other children, but recorded as visitors are Harry (30) Boiler Fireman, Joseph (21) Platers Helper, Albert (16) Unemployed, and George (14) Employed in Shipyard.
